Take a custom built PHP system that uses Global Variables in the address (like www.whatever.com/index.php?cat=color&value=blue). Now, search engines hate this because it is not a static page. It changes depending on the variables put into the link. So, SEO takes these links and turns the variables into imitation folders and pages (like www.whatever.com/color/blue.html). This has just become an imitation static page that search engines like!
